Rory McIlroy: 2011 US Open Champion

Rory McIlroy is just 22 years old and has firmly established his global superstar status with an emphatic win at the US Open.  The youngest winner since 1923.  Despite his stardom he has managed to remain an approachable, down to earth young man from Holywood, Co Down.

Rory’s rise to fame started at the age of 9 when, in 1998, he won the Doral Junior Publix Under 10 in Florida and became the Belfast Telegraph Junior Golfer of the Year.

Andrew Nugent, managing partner of R.A. Glass Associates (Holywood) has been looking after Rory’s eyes since he first needed glasses at the age of 10.  Andrew himself is no mean golfer; he plays off a low single figure handicap and has represented Holywood Golf Club in the finals of several national foursomes competitions; he understands the demand of competitive golf.

Andrew first prescribed contact lenses for Rory when he was just 11 years of age; he has regularly upgraded the lens design and materials as technology has improved to keep pace with Rory’s need of comfortable, stable vision in variable conditions of dryness or humidity for long periods of wear.

Rory now wears the latest generation of soft silicon hydrogel 1-day disposable contact lenses. These lenses are highly permeable to allow the cornea to breathe fully and are 100% UV blocking to protect Rory’s eyes from the harmful effect of sunlight while he is spending many hours on the golf course.
